Revolutionary Road
Dir: Sam Mendes
2008

This is a vacuous, poorly directed and flimsily acted film characterised by underdeveloped characters, unrealistic narrative shifts and conspicuous omissions. A terrible disappointment which deserves none of the hype it has received, as well as being a sad reminder that mediocrity can strike at anytime if you are not careful even with the potential strength of its director and two lead actors.

We journey into 1950s US suburban life to witness the difficulties faced by a couple caught in the crushing cogs of routine. So far, fine. But none of the character development which would justify the growing seeds of discontent is truly sown or credible. Parenting problems are difficult to swallow when the children are never around. The dreams of escape are based on daring which the viewer never witnesses.

This is a perfect example of complacency in the face of previous success: A director who weakens his grasp and delivers only a few atmospheric, albeit empty, shots and a pleasing 1950s wardrobe. Two strong actors who are limited by both a poor script and a seeming lack of commitment. A huge, and overspent, budget which it is impossible to justify (unless the whole crew spent it on barbiturates and sedatives). And, last but not least, a desperate awards system which rewards expectation and reputation rather than achievement and quality.
